DANIELE BUETTI

Daniele Buetti is a Swiss born artist who's work incorporates unique and unusual methods in order to produce very individual pieces of work. I have chose to study Buetti as I feel as though the elaborate use of light and human form works well with the relationships brief as there are various interpretations of the connection between light and vision and the use of portraiture and eyes in particular obviously help emphasise this.

This piece by Buetti is entitled 'All that glitters is not gold'. The technique and how this technique causes such a great effect on the visual representation of the piece is fascinating. In Buetti's work he uses mainly photography and puts very small circles off light around the main focus in his photography. The illumination and representation of these small beams of light really brings another aspect to his work that would be difficult to do with paint or pen. The works are somewhat abstract as there is no direct link between the light and its placement and the original image, meaning the interpretaion of Buetti's work is very much dependant on the viewers connection with the piece. The light that surrounds the face in this piece is almost biblical and angelic, however it contrasts the darkness of the original photo but does not directly cover the face, this may mean that the artist is trying to represent the darkness of the person photographed. The positioning of the light cascading from the eyes may be representative of tears and this may be used to suggest the emotion that is sometimes felt by people but not always shown directly. The sharp contrast between the very dark background and photo and the intense beads of light is the most significant part of this piece in my opinion, suggests that the artist is focussing on the contrast between how someobody is feeling and also the emotions that they show and how they are not always the same and that the surroundings of a person may mask their inner thoughts. Overall this piece, and more significantly the concept and technique is something that I will be looking to experiment with in my pieces.

This piece by Buetti is entitled 'Hands'. There are some major similarities between this piece and the previous piece by Buetti that I have studied. One of which is the inclusion of the small beads of light, there is also the stark contrats between the very dark background and photo and these beads of light. On the other hand this piece does not concentrate on portraiture but instead depicts a hand holding these beads of light. I don't think that this piece is as intense as the first due to the use of the portrait and also the intensity of the light, however I do believe that the meaning behind the piece is just as important and prevelant as that of the first piece. I believe that in this piece Buetti is trying to show how everyone has the chance to grasp something great but how easy it is to loosen your hold and let it fall out of grasp.  This is shown by the beads of light that are being held in the hand and how they appear to be falling away. Overall I love the work of Buetti and feel that it has such a strong visual appearance and also a very deep meaning that is portrayed through the harmonious use of contrast, depth and perception. I think that there are aspects of Buetti's work that I would like to explore and experiment with, I think that the intelligent use of the light would be something worth testing with my work. I may look to use this effect in a different way as my photographs are not as dark as Buetti's photographs. After my experimentation I may look more towards an artist that connects more to my previous work on chemical reactions and cells whilst still holding the strong portraiture aspect and attempt to combine these two aspects together and maybe use that technique for my final piece.

MY RESPONSES

Overall I feel as though my experiements aren't as strong. The stronger ones are the ones in which the backlight it the strongest as the small beads of light appear brighter and contrast better with the original image. I have used a pin to prick small holes into my original photographs and then placing a light behind and them rephotographing them. In contrast to Buetti's pieces I think that the very light photographs that I have used have not worked too well and feel as though there needed to be very dark areas, particularly the background, in order for the small areas of light to have full effect. I also think that the use of the light has made the images even brighter and gave them an orange tinge which I think has actually worked well with the larger image. I think that my most succesful piece is the largest one above as I think that the gave of the subject has worked well with the positioning of the light and adds to the intenisty of the pose. I think that there has been positives and negatives from this technique but collectively I don't feel as if these are some of my stronger works and that I will decide to focus an artist more relavant to the chemical reactions and cell work as I feel that that was much stronger and would work well with the portraiture.
